"Go out with a bang, not a whimper like this. Go out with courage, not with an approach bordering on cowardice."

These are the words of Henry Winter, writing in The Times , following Manchester United's 2-1 Champions League exit at the hands of Sevilla .

United appeared to be scared to attack the visitors' goal, with Romelu Lukaku scoring the hosts' only goal of the game - United had just three shots on target - and were well short of Sevilla in terms of attempts over two legs in the last 16.

Even Tottenham, the other English side knocked out of the Champions League , managed more shots than United and they faced Juventus' defensive wall which consisted of Giorgio Chiellini, Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli.

Total shots (over two legs) Sevilla: 46 Tottenham: 35 Man United: 23

Shots on target (over two legs) Sevilla: 14 Tottenham: 12 Man United: four
