Dean Saunders has SLAMMED Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, insisting he ‘cannot play at this level’ after another dreadful performance in Saturday’s defeat at Manchester United .

It was an even game at Old Trafford but, though the visitors dominated possession, the Red Devils claimed a 2-1 victory thanks to two route one goals finished by Marcus Rashford.

Lovren’s weakness in the air appeared to be targeted by United boss Jose Mourinho , and the Croatian consistantly struggled up against frontman Romelu Lukaku .

Man United scored from their only two shots on target, and both of those came after Lovren was beaten in the air by Lukaku from David de Gea goal-kicks.

Lovren was hammered by Reds fans following the defeat and, speaking to talkSPORT, Saunders said Jurgen Klopp will be ‘raging’ at the centre-back for his costly mistakes.

“If you’re a centre-back and you keep losing headers, you can’t play at this level,” The former Liverpool striker said on Matchday Live .

“Lovren never won a header against Lukaku and it cost Liverpool two goals.

“That's what you’re in the team for! You’ve got to do the basics right.

“The game was quite even apart from two goals from two goal-kicks.

“Jurgen Klopp will be raging because if you can’t defend a punt up the pitch, a 70-yard punt, you’re in trouble.”
