Manchester United are plotting a summer move for Borussia Dortmund Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to reports.
Manager Jose Mourinho is keen to strengthen his back-four this summer having been strapped for options at centre-back this season.
The Red Devils are still thought to be keen on Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld , whose future at Spurs remains uncertain, but the club have also been tracking Papastathopoulos as an alternatives.
According to reports from the Daily Mirror, United have sent scouts to keep tabs on the 29-year-old this season and could make a move for the £20million-rated defender when the transfer window reopens.
He is seen as a more achievable target for the Old Trafford outfit, with Tottenham likely to put a hefty price tag on Alderweireld if they consider selling the Belgian - who is one of the top centre-backs in the Premier League .
Papastathopoulos’ potential arrival would be part of a minor squad overhaul from Mourinho this summer, with United also in the market for a new holding midfielder in preparation for the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick .
The Greece international has made over 150 appearances for Dortmund since being signed by then-manager Jurgen Klopp in 2013, and has 78 caps for his country.
