There are 99 days to go until the 2018 World Cup begins and is counting them down by looking at the competition's most wonderful players.

This list, featuring Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane , looks at the most iconic footballers and their greatest moments – from great goalscorers and majestic defenders to sensational scoundrels and those who just didn’t know the rules.

The Glasgow-born Houghton was part of Jack Charlton’s ragtag bunch of likeable chancers that made the last eight at Italia ’90. However, he’s here for the nine-iron chip that earned the Republic a shock 1-0 win over Italy four years later. Houghton is included at the expense of team-mate John Aldridge, whose USA ’94 highlight was calling an official in a yellow cap a “twat” and a “dickhead”.
