Former Arsenal striker John Hartson has backed Jack Wilshere after the midfielder was branded ‘the most overrated player in the world’ by Roy Keane .
Wilshere came under fire for his poor performance as Arsenal lost 2-1 to Swedish minnows Ostersund in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Gunners still progressed in the competition despite their shock defeat at the Emirates, going through 4-2 on aggregate, but Keane – speaking as a pundit in ITV – was scathing in his assessment of Arsene Wenger’s side’s dreadful display.
But Keane’s former Celtic team-mate, Hartson, has defended the midfielder and says he has ‘undoubted ability’.
Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast , he said: “Wilshere has had a lot of injury problems but I think he has been playing as good as he ever has now.
“He is hot and cold. He went down to Bournemouth and didn’t set the world alight.
“He’s back at Arsenal now but he tends to have a great game and then tends to go quiet in games.
“But he’s got undoubted ability.”
