Arsene Wenger has responded to Roy Keane’s criticism of Jack Wilshere that the midfielder is the ‘most overrated player on the planet’.
Wilshere was singled out by the former Manchester United captain for his poor performance in the Gunners’ shock Europa League defeat to Ostersund on Thursday night.
With a number of players rested for Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Manchester City , the England international was named captain as the Swedish minnows claimed a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, although Arsenal still progressed to the next round 4-2 on aggregate.
Speaking as a pundit on ITV, Keane was brutal in his assessment of the Gunners’ performance, accusing them of having a ‘poor attitude, no energy and no desire’ and also branding Wilshere ‘probably the most overrated player on the planet’ .
Wenger was asked about Keane’s comments in a press conference on Friday, but the manager didn’t appear to be aware of them.
After talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams read out what the former Manchester United captain had said, Wenger sighed and then replied: “You know, it’s very difficult.
“I personally rate Jack very highly and after that [Thursday’s defeat] you can have your own opinions.
“Jack was in a team last night that didn’t perform well, so it was not easy for him.
“Was it one of his best performances last night? Certainly not, but Roy Keane knows that can happen to anybody.”
