Roy Keane has labelled Jack Wilshere ‘the most overrated player on the planet’ following his performance against Ostersund in the Europa League .
Wilshere, the England midfielder, captained Arsenal as they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of minnows Ostersund. The Gunners still progressed to the Europa League last-16 on aggregate, but Thursday’s 2-1 loss preceded further calls for Arsene Wenger to lose his job as manager.
The Swedish side scored twice in a minute midway through the first half to give them hope of completing a remarkable turnaround, though Sead Kolasinac’s strike just after the half-time break put the hosts back in control and eased the pressure Wenger’s men.
Wenger was critical of his side’s performance following the final whistle, though the real criticism came from Roy Keane, the Manchester United great, who was speaking after the match in his role as ITV pundit.
Keane outlined Arsenal’s failures come from their lack of ability to start a game properly, with their character and motivation coming into question.
The player who characterises this failure is Wilshere, as he cannot lead by example despite wearing the captain’s armband.
“Arsenal are a great example of how not to start a game of football ,” Keane said. “They are so slow out of the blocks.
“Poor attitude, no energy, no desire. It’s not like a light switch, you can’t just turn it on and off.
“A lot of that will come from the manager and his coaching staff, but ultimately it has to come from the player. You have to motivate yourself. You have your pride and you want to do well for yourself, your team-mates, your family and to turn up like that was a shambles.
“We have seen it so many times from Arsenal. They went to Nottingham Forest with exactly the same attitude and lost. You make excuses for Arsenal all the time, but it’s a load of rubbish. The Arsenal players must drive you crazy. A shambles.
“You look for your senior players to lead by example. When Wilshere is your captain, to me, he is probably the most overrated player on the planet.”
