How do you solve a problem like Paul Pogba? Give him free reign of the Manchester United midfield, according to Ray Wilkins .
The 24-year-old Frenchman is enduring a difficult period of his Red Devils career and has come under intense scrutiny for a recent drop in form.
Various reports have linked the £89million star with leaving the club, with speculation he has become unhappy with life back at Old Trafford.
Many have pointed the finger at manager Jose Mourinho’s tactics for his recent poor performances, for playing the Frenchman in a deeper role and restricting his opportunities to attack.
And former Red Devils star Wilkins believes to get the best out of the Pogba, Mourinho must take the reins off and give him a freer, more advanced role.
“Paul Pogba will be a great Manchester United player,” Wilkins told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast .
“In my humble opinion, and it’s not for me to tell Jose how to run his side but, I would play Matic and Herrera in the middle of the field and I would release Pogba to play just in behind Lukaku.
“Just release him and let him do what he does.
“If he wants to come back and defend, he can come back and defend, but you get the best out of Paul Pogba when he plays with no reins.
“When he plays as a holding midfield player he gets in the way of Matic, he goes after every ball Matic wants.
“He’s one of those players who wants the ball all the time, so you have to release him into areas where he can create havoc.
“When you see him get forward, the fella creates havoc – he scores goals and he makes great passes for goals.
“I think Lukaku will enjoy it much more as well.”
